Traditions in Wolkenstein

Between Geisler-group, Sellastock and Langkofel lies Wolkenstein, one of the most popular holiday destinations in the South Tyrolean Dolomites. Among Seceda, Raschötz and Monte Pana the village offers plenty of walking paths, cross-country ski tracks and downhill slopes. The Ski-World-Cup takes place annually on the downhill Saslong. Besides the village offers an ice-skating rink, a toboggan run, and during summer numerous cycle paths, horse riding possibilities and climbing routes. Also motor bikers find it the ideal starting point for visiting the surrounding mountain passes.

Every year in August the local population of the valley of Val Gardena meets in finest festive dress. During the event „Val Gardena in Tracht“ the villages Wolkenstein, St. Christina and St. Ulrich unite to form a glorious parade full of colourful costumes and skillfully decorating traditional means of transport.

Those who want to learn more about Ladin Culture and History are well advised to visit the Museum Gherdeina in St. Ulrich. Here you find a collection of the films of Luis Trenker as well as a selection of woodworks created over the past centuries. The tradition of carving in wood in Val Gardena looks back at a history of centuries. Over 100 years ago the art school for wood carvers was founded. The altars, the sacral statues and toys made of wood are world-famous today.

The village trademark Castle Wolkenstein

Many rewarding paths lead through the Dolomites surrounding Wolkenstein. One of them is the easy walk up to the mountain lodge Puez. For this walk you take the gondola in Wolkenstein up to the saddle of Val Gardena. From here you walk about two hours till you reach the lodge, passing the high plateau of Crespeina with its fantastic turquoise-coloured mountain lake.

Via the valley of Langental you return to the village and will undoubtedly come across the sight of the village trademark: the remains of the medieval Castle Wolkenstein in an altitude exceeding 1.600 meters – in the midst of the rocky steep of Mount Stevia. The castle was one responsible for the protection of the pass. Today it merely reminds of the rich history of the valley.
