About strawberry queens and glaciers in Latsch
Take Ortler in the South, the Ötztaler Alps and the National park Stilfserjoch in the North, add 315 sunny days a year and 55 hectares of pure fruit delight – and you might have a first idea of the village Latsch in Martelltal in the South Tyrolean Vinschgau, famous for its strawberries.
At the gates of valley Martell lies this little commune comprising Goldrain, Morter and Tarsch. Due to its location it enjoys many hours of sun every day, a fact already settlers thousands of years ago knew to appreciate. The area in Latsch was inhabited already early on, according to the 5.000 year old engravings on the menhir in the Church Our Lady.
Culture lovers find here three castles, six fortresses and 15 churches which are proof of an exciting and rich past. One of the castles, the village castle of Latsch, towers directly in the center of the little place.
Strawberry Festival
The valley of Martell around Latsch is an attractive destination for hikers, comprising altitudes 3.770 meters. Numerous hiking tours, glacial paths and theme walks are waiting to be discovered – as does the 8 km long Strawberry Walk. This particular walk shines with rich information boards about the little red berry. Strawberries are cultivated here on about 55 hectares; the valley of Martell holds in fact one the highest strawberry fields in Europe. To celebrate this special berry the South Tyrolean Strawberry Festival is held here every year at the end of June; and every three years the strawberry queen is elected.
