Pre-historical findings in St. Kassian
What could be better, than walking directly from your hotel in St. Kassian onto an alpine meadow filled with the most beautiful flowers and herbs, surrounded by the scent of fragrant hay and groundhogs greeting the day? The little village near Stern in the South Tyrolean Dolomites has succeeded to unite hospitality and pristine traditions.
At 1.537 meters height, at the foot of the majestic mountain walls of Conturines, La Varella, Settsass and Lagazuoi, tourism looks back over a long tradition. For the majority of the population it is by now the main source of income. This is why it shouldn’t surprise, that the village comprises a high number of diverse first-class accommodations. Nevertheless, or maybe just because of this, the village radiates a deep sensation of peace which awaits you after visiting one of the many ski-resorts, such as Alta Badia or Sellaronda. During winter the plateau Armentarola opens its corresponding cross-country ski center with over 25 km of tracks. From Piz Sorega at 2.000 meters height a natural toboggan run leads all the way down to the village.
The bear of Conturines
A few years ago the bear museum „Ursus ladinicus“ has opened its doors for the public in St. Kassian. A few centuries ago a local hotelier has found the remains of a pre-historic cave-bear in the grots of Conturines. These were found to be a new type of cave-bear, called “Ursus ladinicus”. The fossile bones were estimated to be approximately 40.000 years old.
The church of the village is a relic from the year 1782 and holds the painting “Martyrium of St. Kassian” from a Silesian artist on its main altar. In the center gourmets find award-winning restaurants with unforgettable delicacies. Those who have acquired a taste for the pristine valley in the midst of the South Tyrolean Dolomites find here the most beautiful hotels in St. Kassian in Alta Badia.
