In the sunny village of Terenten
Above Pustertal on a wide plateau lies Terenten. The quiet sunny village in the holiday region Kronplatz claims to be the place with the most hours of sunshine throughout South Tyrol. In this traditionally agricultural village dairy farming is still an important factor today. Until a few centuries ago the population grew mainly crops which were processed to flower in the mills. The flower was used on the farms to create delicious meals. Some of the mills can still be found today at the small river in Terenten, on the so-called Mill-Road. During summer here the mill festival is celebrated. In the harvest season the hosts of Terenten remember this tradition with the event “Schmelzpfandl”. Then they invite for a special selection of traditional meals.
Traditional costumes, doughnuts and the best dairy cows
A colourful festival filled with music and local specialities is held every year in October. During the “Almabtrieb” the cattle is driven from the mountain pastures down to their warm home in village stables. For this event farmers decorate their cows – especially the best dairy cows – with colourful crowns, fresh flowers and bells. Upon arrival in the village the herd is welcomed with music and standing ovation.
The spectacle takes place under the curious watch of the Icelandic horses. With the horses from the local stable you can go on great rides through the village, its meadows and surrounding forests. On the way you might come across the one or other Nordic Walker and hiker on the discovery of the many wonderful walks. Beautiful destinations are the earth pyramids; or the mountain lodge Astnerbergalm and Lake Tiefrasten.
During winter the village offers a cross-country skiing track as well as plenty of possibilities for sleigh riding. Then a family friendly ski lift opens in the village where beginners can practice their skiing skills, before possibly taking the free ski-bus to the nearby ski-resort Kronplatz in Reischach. Not too far from the ski tracks the town of Bruneck invites visitors to stroll down its romantic alleys and to visit its charming Christmas market.
