Art and bicycles in Blumau
Blumau is a little village at 315 meters in the immediate proximity of Bozen. The name of the village derives from the word “Plumme”, meaning as much as timber raft. In fact it once was the collection point for cut wood; here it was organized before it was send to the Po Valley via the river Eisack. To the day the village is an important passage point for the surrounding villages Karneid, Steinegg, Tiers, Völs, Seis and Kastelruth.
Blumau is the starting point for the so-called “Cycle Art Trail” leading all the way to Bozen. Along the tracks bikers come across numerous artworks, which were realized by the protected workshops in Salten-Schlern.
About beer traditions and medieval castles
Towards the end of the 19th century the excellent brewery gained the little village great publicity. The brewery was founded by Josef Kräutner; especially its beer garden was popular in the region. Then the noble society approached on chariots from Bozen to enjoy the freshly brewed beer under the old trees of the cool valley of Eisacktal. At the beginning of the 20st century the brewery was closed and the building used for other purposes.
The village Blumau is divided on three communes: Völs am Schlern, Ritten and Karneid. On a steep rock in Karneid towers a 13th-century Castle filled with precious details, as the roman frescos in the chapel. The Castle of Karneid can be visited upon reservation at the local commune within a guided tour.
Due to its location, trips to the neighboring villages and cities are well advised for visitors of Blumau.
