St. Leonhard in Passeier: Home of Andreas Hofer

Directly in the heart of nature park Texel Group, amidst the impressive Alps of Sarntal, Stubai and Ötztal, lies the main town in the valley Passeiertal, St. Leonhard in Passeier: Birth place of Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. Due to the climatic benefits and modern infrastructure comprising little shops, cozy cafés and hotels, the holiday village is ideal for an active vacation in every season.

Experience winter fun in all its variations in the ski areas Pfelders, Ratschings-Jaufen and Meran 2000; the active sporting programme reaches from ice skating on the romantic natural ice-skating-rink in Pfelders over toboggan-runs, cross-country tracks, horse-riding tours and sleigh-rides to numerous wonderful winter walks far from the busy downhill slopes. Snowy winter wonderlands lead into the unique world of mountains and glaciers.

During summer the mountains of Passeiertal charm with blooming alpine pastures, filled with alpine roses and Edelweiss alike. If you cross the botanical treasure of nature park Texel Group, you arrive at the High Route of Meran, the High Route of Tyrol or the European Long-Distance Hiking Trail. Discover the Hirzer Area, reachable from Saltaus, a fascinating landscape filled with Mother Nature’s finest work. The many villages around the South Tyrolean village of St. Leonhard in Passeier – Riffian, Marling, Partschins and Algund – offer lovely walks along the ancient irrigation channels, the so-called “Waalwege”.

The probably most famous son of St. Leonhard

This very holiday paradise amidst the mountains is the home of Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. His birth house “Sandhof” contains today the Museum Passeier, where visitors can learn about his life and achievements. Also the farm-group “Schildhöfe”, the spectacular Castle Jaufenburg with its mural paintings or the museums of the area impress. Visit the Buncor Museum of Hearts in Saltaus and the Tractor Museum in Kuens in the environs of Meran. • Our favourite place to stay in the Dolomites for a ski holiday, Hotel Gran Baita has become a genuine home-from-home that we look forward to returning to year after year. The food is consistently superb, with generous breakfasts and beautifully prepared dinners that feel closer to fine dining than to standard “ski hotel” fare. The atmosphere throughout the hotel is relaxed and casual, so you can properly unwind after a day on the mountain. Staff are friendly and always make us feel genuinely welcome, from reception to the restaurant and bar, and that warmth really adds to the overall experience. Gran Baita is the place we keep coming back to, and it’s the first hotel we recommend to friends planning a trip to the Dolomites.
  • Great experience at the Alpin Garden. Hotel with a very nice spa, nice service, great friendly personnel. Ski area shuttle also for ski rentals. The rooms are very nice but I’m not a big fan of the main areas of the hotel like restaurants and lounge. It all fell very crowded and not traditional mountain looking. Spa is high standards + small useful gym.
  • It was an absolutely stunning hotel. We got upgraded to an amazing Love suite, the view was incredible. The breakfast was served in a very unique way, we enjoyed it . We ll come back again next year . Marcus is an outstanding manager, he realty knows what are the needs of the travelers . The Spa is gorgeous with a very strong sauna . Thank you for having us !!!
