Kings of the castle in Welsberg
Due to its location between Alps and Dolomites, Welsberg offers a range of hikes, but also a decent selection of cultural highlights. High above the village, on a majestic rock, towers Castle Welsperg – testimony of the once outstanding position of the village. Today guests of the hotels in Welsberg can visit the well preserved core of the castle. During summer the site is used to stage events and concerts. The Castle-Path introduces into the history and culture of the village. Other sights are the Monastery of the Saint Clare's Sisters with the circular monovallate; or the Church of Welsberg with the works of famous local artist Paul Troger from 17th century. The birth house of the baroque painter close by the church and was rebuilt to a presentable museum.
Traditional living
During summer the Dolomites offer here plenty of destinations to discover as well as the green valley of Gsies or the glacial world of the Rieserferner. Around Castle Welsberg walking paths invite to go slow and stay: easy strolls through the busy village or alpine paths leading to mountain lodges. The village in Pustertal has its own train station and is situated at the cycle path, which allows excursions by bike and the return by train. Above Welsberg lies Taisten, a traditional village living today as once.
During winter there is an ice skating rink directly in the village, and in the near Rasen-Antholz modern cross-country tracks. The ski-bus connects the hotels in Welsberg with the ski-lifts or the ski-resort Kronplatz in Olang, or one can visit the smaller quieter areas on site: Helm and Rotwand in Sexten and Haunold in Innichen.
