In the apple paradise Natz-Schabs
On a heart shaped high plain between Eisack and Rienz lies Natz-Schabs. The village is situated on an old valley plain once offering the site for glacier streams. The ground here is particularly fertile due to the climate and soil quality. Here grow the wines Sylvaner and Müller-Thurgau manufactured to fine South Tyrolean white wines.
The new wines can be tasted in autumn during the so-called “Törggelen”, and offer a special experience for the senses. Places of interest in the village are the church in Natz; its tower was built of 1.400 blocks of granite. The sculptures at the high altar were created by South Tyrolean artist Michael Pacher. Fans of wooden art can visit here the “Rudolf Bacher Museum” where the best works of the wood sculptor are exhibited.
Apple blossom
On the most known high plain in Eisacktal special apples are cultivated; one of them is the legendary Golden Delicious. The old tradition of apple farming transforms the landscape in spring into a glory of white-rose apple blossoms. Well worth experiencing is the blossom-walk among the blooming orchards. The apple season reaches its peak in October with the “Sunnseitn-Apple-weeks” – hosting an apple festival and the coronation of the apple queen. Then, the color of the leaves changes to red and yellow and offers an interesting contrast to the snowy peaks and the deep blue sky typical for the region.
Also the city of Brixen or the monastery of Neustift are worthwhile destinations and easily reachable by foot. In winter the village and the hotels in Natz Schabs offer good connections to the ski areas Plose, Gitschberg Jochtal in Vals and Meransen and Kronplatz in Reischach.
