On pilgrimage in Petersberg
The possibly most famous South Tyrolean pilgrimage site can be reached from Petersberg within a good hour: Maria Weißenstein with the Church of St. Leonhard at 1.380 meters above sea level. Virgin Mary is said to have appeared here farmer Leonhard Weißenstein in 1553, in order to heal him from his illness. He healed and in his gratitude he built her a chapel.
Soon the chapel couldn’t hold the number of pilgrims who came in great numbers over the pilgrim’s path from Leifers. In the 17th century a baroque church was built next to the chapel. Not too long ago Pope John Paul II visited the powerful place himself and declared complete absolution to all those pilgrims in search of true liberation, genuine and honest in their motivations.
