St. Ulrich, heart of the Dolomites
At the foot of the high Dolomites and its rugged rock formations, surrounded by green alpine pastures and densely wooded steeps, lies the main village in the valley of Val Gardena – St. Ulrich. A monument commemorates the mountaineer, architect, author and mountain film pioneer Luis Trenker, who was born here in 1892. The pale mountains gained international recognition through his book „Val Gardena, heart of the Dolomites“.
In the village center the Museum Gherdeina shows an exciting exhibit about the fascination nature and culture of the colourful mountain valley Val Gardena as well as a collection of wooden carvings from the past centuries. Every August here in the valley of Val Gardena – in the villages St. Ulrich, St. Christina and Wolkenstein – the folkloristic show „Val Gardena in Tracht“ (Tracht=traditional costume) is held, where the population performs a parade in wonderful costumes.
The International Woodcarving Center
For a few centuries a large part of the inhabitants of St. Ulrich have been carving in wood – creating especially sacral sculptures, altars and wooden toys. Over two centuries the village was known as the International Woodcarving Center. Over 100 years ago Ferdinand Demetz founded the art school in St. Ulrich, successful to the day.
1935 the first cable car was built here, leading up to Seiser Alm. Soon the first ski-school followed; and a few decades later a chairlift to Raschötz and a cable car to Secedaalm. On Seceda you find one of the longest downhill tracks of the Dolomites, the site for the annual Gardenissima, one of the longest giant slalom races worldwide.
The hotels in St. Ulrich are connected directly to the largest ski-resorts of the area: in the South to Seiser Alm, in the East to Seceda, in the North to Raschötz. Besides Sellaronda, toboggan-runs, cross-country ski tracks, ice-skating rinks and snow-shoe-walking-paths, St. Ulrich offers wonderful walks to the valley Annatal and up to Col de Flam – as well as a few interesting indoor-sporting-possibilities in the wellness facilities of Mar Dolomit.
