Fantastic Taufers im Münstertal
According to a local myth, an old woman once lived in the valley of Avinga, clearing constantly stones from her lawn. One day the devil appeared and proposed to her, that he would clear all the stones, while she should pray „Our Father“. If he was to be faster than her, he would get her soul. So it was. They started and just as the woman said „Amen“, the devil took the last stone to his hand. His fingerprints are still visible today on this devil's stone („Tuiflstoan) in the valley of Avinga.
In the West of South Tyrol, amidst the mighty massif of Ortler and the Swiss mountains, surrounded by pristine nature and covered in fantastic tales and myths, lies the village Taufers im Münstertal. The place is situated at the entrance to the valley Münstertal, which lies partly in South Tyrol, partly in Switzerland. It can be reached via Laatsch (commune of Mals) and Glurns, the only city in Vinschgau and the smallest in South Tyrol.
Mysterious Taufers
Seven churches and chapels, numerous historical buildings and three castles play here testimonies of the past: the castles Rotund, Reichenberg and the tower „Helfmirgott“ (=“Help me God“). The tower - once a prison - has its name from a myth, according to which a beautiful farmers girl was running from a knight who besieged her. When she didn't see any other way out, she threw herself from the tower shouting: „Help me God!“ Indeed she survived the fall without a scratch.
Taufers offers many beautiful hiking trails; the most popular are the „Eseltrai“ (=donkey trail) leading to a spectacular lookout over Vinschgau and the „Trimm dich Pfad“ (=exercise trail). In the valley Avingatal a little lake with barbecue and picnic possibility is another advisable destination.
