Innichen and the giant Haunold
Innichen is looking back upon a tumultuous history. The foundation of the village took place with the settlement of Celtic people, who called it the area of Indius. A few hundred years later the Romans conquered the area and built the military station Littamum, which another few hundred years later was destroyed completely, for yet unknown reasons. In the year 769 the Benedictines monastery of was founded here for missionary purposes: monastery Innichen. From the oldest monastery in Tyrol developed the market village of Innichen in Hochpustertal.
The churches on site testify of this influential time: the church of St. Francis, the baroque church of St. Michael and the cathedral, trademark of Innichen.
In the cathedral you will learn about the myths of this South Tyrolean village midst the Dolomites. A rib near the main entrance is said to stem from the giant Haunold, who is said to have lived on the corresponding mountain and helped the locals of Innichen to build the cathedral.
Summer toboggan run and adventure pool
The area around Innichen offers a lot of interesting destinations for excursions. The bicycle route to Brixen offers wonderful views for instance. Besides the village in Pustertal is the starting point for one of the popular Dolomite high routes. For those preferring shorter excursions, the nearby villages of Toblach and Niederdorf are well worth a visit, as well as the local mountain Haunold – by foot or by bus; moreover you may comfortably reach the united skiing areas Helm and Rotwand with the Ski Express Pustertal. The way down can be mastered on the summer toboggan run; the fun bob of Innichen is one of the longest summer toboggan runs in Italy and especially for kids a fun adventure.
