Kiens on the Road of St. James

The commune of Kiens lies in the midst of the green valley Pustertal on the corresponding road and the river Rienz. The place comprises Kiens, St. Sigmund, Ehrenburg, Getzenberg and Hofern.

The location of the place offers plenty of recreational possibilities. During winter ski-buses bring fans of winter sports regularly to the ski-resort Kronplatz. During summer the surrounding towns Bruneck and Brixen are waiting to be explored. If you consider starting your discovery right in the center of the commune, it is advisable to acquire a hiking map directly at the tourist information or in the hotels in Kiens.

Kiens is situated on the South Tyrolean Road of St. James and whoever follows this road, comes directly to the village of St. Sigmund. This sleepy spot promises a fabulous walk through its center. The gothic church contains one of the oldest and most important winged altars in South Tyrol. If you continue the road till the end of the village, crossing the main road, you reach the train station of St. Sigmund – today mere reminder of the former connection to the railway traffic. From here you can follow the cycle path all the way to Brixen.

About woods and lakes

In Ehrenburg you find actual connection to the railway traffic, which is why the train station offers visitors of hotels in Ehrenburg a good arrival alternative to the car. Above the village towers Castle Ehrenburg from the 12th century, directly besides the beautiful church. Close by a path leads up to the woods of Getzenberg, and further till you reach the alpine meadows of Rodenecker Alm with the peak Astjoch. For those you do not aim that high, the forests of Getzenberg and its fertile soils constitute a paradise for fans of mushrooms and berries.

In the opposite direction lies Hofern on the sunny hillsides of the valley. Also this village is reachable over a walking path from Kiens. The path leads past Lake Issinger Weiher. In Hofern an incredible view over the valley and the mountain Kronplatz expects visitors. From here numerous walking- and hiking paths lead all the way to Lake Grünbach and the mountain lodge of Moarhofalm. The village is ideal for all those, who are looking for peace and tranquillity, plenty of sun and fresh mountain air. Find here the most beautiful hotels in Kiens in the holiday region Kronplatz.

  • We had a wonderful stay at this hotel and truly enjoyed every moment. The staff were exceptionally kind, attentive and always ready to make us feel welcome. The cleanliness throughout the hotel was impeccable. The setting is simply beautiful, with a charming inner courtyard, lovely garden and two swimming pools. It is a very peaceful and relaxing environment. The food was delicious, with great care taken to use local, organic and responsibly farmed products. We also particularly enjoyed discovering the excellent wines from South Tyrol. We appreciated the range of activities offered by the hotel, including guided hikes, mountain biking and wine tastings. The possibility of enjoying an afternoon snack was also a lovely touch. The complimentary public transport pass provided by the hotel was very convenient and allowed us to explore the area easily. Finally, the size of the hotel is just perfect. It is family-run, which gives it a warm and personal atmosphere. You immediately feel comfortable and at home. **A truly wonderful experience we would be delighted to come back!**
