Among the 3.000 meter peaks in Luttach
In the heart of the South Tyrolean Ahrntal, North of Sand in Taufers and South of St. Johann and Prettau, in the midst of green meadows and profound coniferous forests, surrounded by fourteen 3.000 meter peaks, lies the commune Luttach - or “Luchta” as the locals call the village lovingly and not without pride. Luttach was one of the first communes in Ahrntal to offer accommodation and thus led the way towards tourism. Once upon a time, travelers came with the train to Luttach, but also over the Alps of Zillertal. The most important pass was the route via Schwarzenstein.
Today there are no more train tracks here, but nevertheless the commune still offers a fine starting point for numerous excursions, whether easygoing day-tours or hikes of several days from one lodge to the next. From the hotels in Luttach the Waterfalls of Pojer or Black River are easily reachable in half an hour. A local rafting club offers adventure in the water. Besides the classic white-water rafting, the club offers Canyoning, secured hikes through the wild waters and waterfalls.
Horse lovers are well advised to book a horse-back-ride or a trekking-tour. The church on the hill is one of the trademarks of the village and consecrated to Sebastian the Saint of the plague. Once, the entire valley went on a pilgrimage to Luttach on “Sebastiani-Day”, on the 20st of January. Many believers come annually to Luttach to celebrate this day with a special memorial service.
In the international artists’ workshop
Well worth a visit is the museum of nativity sets Maranatha – not only around Christmas time. The collection includes alpine hand-carved nativity sets and some particularly exotic and oriental pieces.
The International Symposium for Wood Sculptures has by now become an annual event and unites artists and sculptors from all over the world in the little village of Luttach. Participants fly in from countries as China, Bulgaria, Spain and many others to amaze the crows by transforming plain logs of wood into unique pieces of art.
