In the climatic spa St. Johann
In the midst of the Zillertaler Alps, at 1.000 meters altitude lies the idyllic village of St. Johann. Here, in the heart of Ahrntal, in the holiday region Pustertal, visitors find a reign of clear mountain air, picturesque farming houses, green pastures and high snowy peaks. The traditional farm settlement presents itself today with a dignified village center built around the baroque church. The wild rivers were regulated over the years to such extend, that areas – formerly non-adept for construction – hold today the ground for large family houses. The nearby ski- and hiking resorts Klausberg in Steinhaus and Speikboden in Sand in Taufers are easily reachable from the hotels in St. Johann.
Home of the Oberkofler brothers
St. Johann is also known as „Ahrn“ and was long time the base for the clerics, providing spiritual guidance for the whole valley. The name of the village refers to St. John the Baptist; the baroque church is consecrated to him. Not far from the church lies the Oberkofler-Museum, the birth house of the brothers who lived roughly 100 years ago. Joseph was famous for his lyrics and the younger brother John for his sacral paintings: the frescos on the cemetery-arches are his work.
In the neighboring village Mühlegg, a Museum of Minerals provides interesting geological insights. From here a beautiful walking path leads all the way to the waterfalls of Frankbach. Visitors are well advised to take a guided tour through the medieval Castle in Sand in Taufers, walk along the Path of St. Francis towards the waterfalls of Rein, or experience aguided tour through the mines of Prettau. The true meaning of “climatic spa” can be fully internalized while inhaling the clean air on the alpine heights or in the Climatic Gallery in Prettau; but first, book here your holidays in the most beautiful hotel in St. Johann in the South Tyrolean Tauferer Ahrntal.
