About the history of mining in Steinhaus
Beneath wildly ascending mountain walls ending in snowy peaks holding the ground for mountain farms, lies Steinhaus in the valley of Tauferer Ahrntal. The village, named after its remarkably large copper-red stone-houses, was long time the administrative center of the copper mine in Prettau. All goods needed for the mining business were stored here in a large warehouse along with the corn – the miners’ food and wages in kind. After the mine was shut down, this so-called “Kornkasten” was standing empty for many years. Today it homes the mining museum, giving precious insights into the mining history in Steinhaus.
