Tisens in the empire of the chestnut

The municipality near Meran is surrounded by magnificent chestnut groves and is composed of the main village Tisens and the districts Gfrill, Grissian, Naraun, Platzers, Prissian and Schernag. Here, you will look forward to numerous hours of sun, tranquillity, a picturesque natural landscape and excellent hotels with exclusive well-being offers.

Tisens is known for its sweet chestnuts as well as for the chestnut fair, a wonderful event in autumn. During this season, you can experience the Törggelen tradition in Tisens where the roasted chestnut is given great importance.

The mild climate in the village at about 630 m of altitude guarantees perfect conditions for hiking, walking and mountain biking from spring until late autumn. Moreover, Tisens is an excellent starting point for excursions to the worth-seeing city of Meran or to South Tyrol’s capital Bozen.

Families, who would like to spend their holidays in a hotel in Tisens, will look forward to the 4 km long path of felt art with magical creatures made of felt – a real highlight for kids. We also recommend the stroller-friendly adventure trail Vorbichl in Prissian and Rainguthof farm in Gfrill. This rustic mountain farm is the home of many animals that also look forward to being visited.

Castles, ruins & other sights

In the surroundings of your hotel in Tisens, you will find numerous worth-seeing churches and chapels, romantic castles and enchanted ruins. You should absolutely visit Katzenzungen Castle in Prissian. The well-preserved complex can be reached via a cosy walking path. In the castle garden, you will find the famous Versoaln vine, which is 350-400 years old and whose canopy covers a surface of 300 m².

Fahlburg Castle, which is located in Prissian too, is one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in South Tyrol and is frequently used as an event location. Wehrburg Castle in Prissian dates back to the 113th century and accommodates a castle hotel today.

Another popular excursion destination is St. Hippolyte church in the district of Naraun. The picturesque church was built on a hill that was formulary a pagan place of worship. Findings of the Neolithic period, Bronze Age and Iron Ages give proof of the early settlements of the village.

  • Our favourite place to stay in the Dolomites for a ski holiday, Hotel Gran Baita has become a genuine home-from-home that we look forward to returning to year after year. The food is consistently superb, with generous breakfasts and beautifully prepared dinners that feel closer to fine dining than to standard “ski hotel” fare. The atmosphere throughout the hotel is relaxed and casual, so you can properly unwind after a day on the mountain. Staff are friendly and always make us feel genuinely welcome, from reception to the restaurant and bar, and that warmth really adds to the overall experience. Gran Baita is the place we keep coming back to, and it’s the first hotel we recommend to friends planning a trip to the Dolomites.
  • Great experience at the Alpin Garden. Hotel with a very nice spa, nice service, great friendly personnel. Ski area shuttle also for ski rentals. The rooms are very nice but I’m not a big fan of the main areas of the hotel like restaurants and lounge. It all fell very crowded and not traditional mountain looking. Spa is high standards + small useful gym.
  • It was an absolutely stunning hotel. We got upgraded to an amazing Love suite, the view was incredible. The breakfast was served in a very unique way, we enjoyed it . We ll come back again next year . Marcus is an outstanding manager, he realty knows what are the needs of the travelers . The Spa is gorgeous with a very strong sauna . Thank you for having us !!!
