At the gate of King Laurin’s rose garden in Welschnofen
On special evenings the rays of the setting sun cover Mt. Rosengarten with a glowing red light. This phenomenon is called Alpglow or Enrosadira and is said to have been caused by Laurin, the good-natured king of the dwarfs. When he succeeded to escape after years of imprisonment, he returned home to his deeply red rose garden (=Rosengarten) in all its glory. Once he caught sight of the garden, which had been the cause for the enemy discovering his kingdom, he got so furious, that he petrified the roses. Nobody should see them no more, neither at day nor at night. It happened that in his anger he forgot the twilight, which is why the red garden is still today visible in the Dolomites, best from the hotels in Welschnofen in Eggental.

On the lakeshore of mythical Karersee
The mountain village Welschnofen lies in the midst of alpine pastures and profound coniferous forests. Those who follow the “Fairy-Tale Walk” arrive at one of the most beautiful lakes in the country, the Lake Karersee. The crystal-clear water mirrors Mt. Rosengarten and Latemar in in the early morning and evening hours. The incomparable beauty of the lake led to its long history of source of inspiration for artists and visitors. One of the most known Dolomite-myths tells about the mermaid of Karersee and how it happened that the lake shimmers today in all colours of the rainbow.
From here the path continues up to Karerpass. The pass offers visitors a spectacular panorama over the area and is especially popular with bikers and motorbikers. On those breathtaking heights golfers find a golf course with unique panorama to refine their handicap.
