Arriving in Ahornach
Ahornach or „Fochina“ as the locals call it, lies in the South Tyrolean commune Sand in Taufers on a northern hillside at 1.400 meters offerings a unique view over the entire valley of Tauferer Ahrntal. From here one can easily reach the path leading up to the mountain pastures of Rein. If you spot a few colourful dots in the blue skies on your way, you may have come across a few paragliders. Due to its favorable wind conditions, Ahornach presents a paradise for paragliders. During winter a skibus brings winter sports enthusiasts directly from the hotels in Ahornach to the ski-resorts Klausberg, Speikboden or Kronplatz.
At the end of August Ahornach presents the “Fochina Alpfestival”, an insider tip for all those who enjoy a festive mood. Then traditional music echoes on the high route of Ahornach and local specialties are dished up, such as fresh “Krapfen” (local doughnuts), dumplings with cabbage salad, barbecued delicacies, sheep cheese, and farmers’ bread with alp butter and home-made cake.
On the road with mountaineer Hans Kammerlander
Kammerlander grew up on a mountain farm in Ahornach where he still lives today. During his life he has already climbed twelve of the fourteen 8.000 meter peaks in Himalaya and Karakorum, seven of which together with Reinhold Messner. 1990 he was the first to ski down Mount Nanga Parbat, 1996 Mount Everest followed.
