Ahornach or „Fochina“ as the locals call it, lies in the South Tyrolean commune Sand in Taufers on a northern hillside at 1.400 meters offerings a unique view over the entire valley of Tauferer Ahrntal. From here one can easily reach the path leading up to the mountain pastures of Rein. If you spot a few colourful dots in the blue skies on your way, you may have come across a few paragliders. Due to its favorable wind conditions, Ahornach presents a paradise for paragliders. During winter a skibus brings winter sports enthusiasts directly from the hotels in Ahornach to the ski-resorts Klausberg, Speikboden or Kronplatz.
At the end of August Ahornach presents the “Fochina Alpfestival”, an insider tip for all those who enjoy a festive mood. Then traditional music echoes on the high route of Ahornach and local specialties are dished up, such as fresh “Krapfen” (local doughnuts), dumplings with cabbage salad, barbecued delicacies, sheep cheese, and farmers’ bread with alp butter and home-made cake.

The food was delicious, with great care taken to use local, organic and responsibly farmed products. We also particularly enjoyed discovering the excellent wines from South Tyrol.
We appreciated the range of activities offered by the hotel, including guided hikes, mountain biking and wine tastings. The possibility of enjoying an afternoon snack was also a lovely touch.
