Visiting „No Man‘s Land“ in Brenner
Bookworms and philosophers find a paradise on earth on an alpine cabin at 2.000 meters above the village Brenner. Here in a little lodge lies a library-treasure comprising a proud number of 100 books. The artist Peter Kaser is the creator of this unusual accommodation, born in the course of the project “No Man’s Land”. If you would like to visit the library, you need to contact the artist personally. The overnight stay in this very particular hotel in Brenner is free of charge.
The area around Brenner became first known due to the discovery of warm mineral springs in Brennerbad around 1400. During the years to follow the village reached incredible fame as one of the most important health resorts in South Tyrol. During this time the Grand Hotel was built in Brennerbad, with many famous guests, such as Henrik Ibsen and Richard Strauss. The water of the spring was used to heal a variety of conditions. A true highlight in Brenner are the pristine alpine walks and pastures, leading up to the most reclusive lodges, one of which the lodge “Enzian” near Zirog. During winter a toboggan-run leads over 6,5 km down to Brennerbad.
Market-Day at the border
On the fifth and the twentieth of each month - except Sundays, then the market day moves to Saturdays - the market square at Brenner comes to life with merchandise of every kind. Those who visit the village on another day of the month can find here the modern shopping outlet center comprising approximately 60 shops.
The Plessi Museum represents another highlight at Brenner. Built at the exact spot of the former customs, the museum is the first Italian example of a museum at the highway. It holds videos, drawings and installations of artist Fabrizio Plessi, as well as his installation dedicated to the provinces Trentino, Bozen and Tyrol.
Nature lovers find here a number of walks through the fantastic surroundings high up to mountain pastures where lodges invite to rest and taste traditional South Tyrolean cuisine whilst enjoying the spectacular views over the Alps and the Dolomites. From here you can walk over the high routes of the Eisacktal all the way to Sterzing. Experienced mountainbikers might especially enjoy the old military roads at the border. From Gossensass towards Pflersch a road leads towards Giggelberg up to the state border and the pass “Sandjöchl”. From there the track continues towards Kreuzjoch until it descends again towards “Wechselalm” and the starting point.
