In the Empire of the Dolomites in Enneberg
In the South Tyrolean valley Gadertal, the commune Enneberg comprises the village Enneberg Pfarre, St. Vigil, Welschellen, Tamers, Zwischenwasser and Rautal. Zwischenwasser forms the starting point of this little side valley and the mountain lodge Pederü at 1.540 meters forms the end of the valley. In between lies the valley Rautal with its popular cross-country ski track. From the hotels in Enneberg, Pederü is easily reachable by public transport. From here various unique hikes start up to the mountains, partly on military streets built during the First World War.
The valley, its buildings and Viles are living testimony of the rich history looking back over thousands of years. Viles are characteristic settlement formations of Gadertal, which are composed of farm house with stables and living quarters. The main church of the valley is in Enneberg-Parrish, stems from the 11th century and is a well-visited pilgrim-destination. The church impresses with its high gothic tower, its baroque style and its wooden high altar from Renaissance. A jewel from the time of late Baroque is the church of St. Vigil. Here special emphasis lies on the artistic frescos and the paintings in the Stations of the Cross. In front of the church a bronze statue reminds of the Tyrolean freedom fighter Katharina Lanz, who at the age of 26 fought Napoleonic troupes in Spinges with a hayfork.
Culinary art beyond the mountains
The name Enneberg means translated: „from beyond the mountains“. The South Tyrolean village lies actually directly in the midst of the Dolomites and in the nature park Fanes-Sennes-Prags. At the end of St. Vigil visitors get a small taste of the park: in the nature park house and its little museum. As diverse the nature, so are the possibilities: skiing in the ski-resort Kronplatz, Après-Ski in the valley, hundreds of kilometers of walking routes, the climbing garden in Tamers, shopping in the village.
Those who would like to get to know the Ladin Culinary Culture, are well advised with the local dishes, which specialty derives from the one few ingredients available to local farmer-wives, which inspired them to creatively use what was available.
