On the trails of the miners in Gossensass

The village in the Northern valley of Valle Isarco can look back on glorious times. In the 15th century Gossensass gained great wealth through the discovery of iron and silver in the valley of Pflersch. The old miners-houses with the ore-steps above the gates frame to the day the streets and the alleys of Gossensass. Then the Chapel of St. Barbara was built and dedicated to the patron of the miners.

150 years later most of the ores were mined and Gossensass and Pflersch were forgotten, until at the beginning of the 19th century warm mineral springs were discovered in Brennerbad near Brenner. During this period greatly elegant hotels were built in Gossensass. Now the village has become one of the most important health resorts in South Tyrol. Celebrities such as writer Henrik Ibsen were among the visitors of Gossensass; today the Ibsenmuseum in the City Hall tells the tale.

At the gate to the Silver Valley

The world of mountains around Gossensass invites for hikes and discoveries, especially interesting with passionate guides. The valley of Plersch or the so-called “Silvervalley” is one of the most beautiful valleys in South Tyrol. Interesting destinations are the lodge of Tribulaun or the waterfalls of Plersch.

In the winter the ski areas Ratschings and Ladurns are easily reachable. The ski area of Ladurns is relatively small, but offers slopes on different levels, a fun park for snowboarders, a ski kinderland with practice lawn, a cross-country circuit, several toboggan-runs and numerous cabins to stop, warm up and recharge with one of the delicious local meals.

Not far from Gossensass lies Brenner, especially exciting during market days. Towards South lies Sterzing, one of the most beautiful small towns in Italy. A visit in the former Fugger-town promises impressive images, stimulating strolls and during the Lantern-Festival in the summer a cheerful atmosphere filled with music, dance and South Tyrolean delicacies. After such event- and joyful day you will sleep in one of the hotels in Gossensass better than once the aristocrats on cure. Find here the best hotels in Gossensass in Eisacktal.

  • We are currently staying here for six nights with my husband and our dog for a ski holiday, and overall we are having a very good experience. The hotel has been newly renovated and features a very modern design with bright, natural colors. The rooms feel fresh and comfortable, the beds are very cozy, the towels are fluffy, and the windows can be completely darkened, which makes for excellent sleep. However, a small note regarding the newly renovated rooms: in many of them the toilet is separated from the open bathroom only by a glass door next to the sink, which offers very little privacy. For that reason we chose a smaller Smart Plus room. It has a rather narrow layout, but the toilet is fully separate with a proper door. Considering that the hotel aims to be a 4-star superior property, there are a few small details missing that one would normally expect at this price level. In the room there is no cosmetic mirror (which is almost essential for people who wear glasses), no cosmetic tissues, no conditioner, no body lotion, no laundry bag, and no shoehorn — items that even many standard 4-star hotels usually provide. Another small but somewhat awkward detail: feminine hygiene products should not be disposed of in the toilet, which is of course understandable. However, the room only has a small open trash bin, which is not the most comfortable solution for this situation. One of the biggest highlights is the staff. Everyone is extremely friendly, helpful, and attentive — at the reception, in the restaurant, at the bar, and also the housekeeping team. This truly makes a big difference in any hotel. Ernesto in particular has been wonderfully kind and even frothed warm soy milk for us on request. The food is outstanding at all meals. In the morning I especially love the fresh juice press and the large selection of nuts, chia seeds, bee pollen, dried fruits and many other options for a healthy muesli. The only slightly amusing exception is the “egg chef,” who has the charm of a drill sergeant and is perhaps best approached with caution. Because we are traveling with our dog, the hotel kindly assigned us a table in a side room of the restaurant where dogs are allowed. Unfortunately, this room feels rather bare, bright, and not very cozy, so we actually prefer leaving our furry friend in the room during dinner. In the restaurant, if you are lucky enough to get a table by the large street-facing windows, the space is bright and pleasant. However, there are also dining areas without windows, which means very little daylight and no view. The location is excellent for skiing: the slope can be reached with a short 20-meter walk along the road, and a ski rental shop is located directly across from the hotel. Overall it‘s not a quiet place due to it’s location directly at the main street. The fitness room is small but equipped with very high-quality machines. People who are familiar with training equipment will find everything they need. I cannot comment on the wellness area, as we usually do not use spa facilities. The underground parking garage is spacious enough even for somewhat larger cars. Overall, we are enjoying our stay very much thanks to the friendly staff, great food, modern design, and excellent location for skiing — but a few additional amenities and small improvements would make the hotel truly live up to its 4-star superior claim.
  • Stosunek jakości do ceny oraz położenie Hotelu. Do każdego ośrodka było bardzo blisko. Do ski busów wystarczyło przejść na drugi stronę ulicy. Restauracja z miłą.obsługą i bardzo dobrym chefem. Polecam z czystym sercem.
  • Our favourite place to stay in the Dolomites for a ski holiday, Hotel Gran Baita has become a genuine home-from-home that we look forward to returning to year after year. The food is consistently superb, with generous breakfasts and beautifully prepared dinners that feel closer to fine dining than to standard “ski hotel” fare. The atmosphere throughout the hotel is relaxed and casual, so you can properly unwind after a day on the mountain. Staff are friendly and always make us feel genuinely welcome, from reception to the restaurant and bar, and that warmth really adds to the overall experience. Gran Baita is the place we keep coming back to, and it’s the first hotel we recommend to friends planning a trip to the Dolomites.
