In the oasis of Leifers
South of Bozen in the midst of apple-orchards lies the peaceful small town Leifers, the youngest town in South Tyrol. The surrounding area is ideal for vast walks and cycle-tours to Bozen, Meran and the lakes of Montiggl, after which relaxing in the hotel in Leifers is particularly lovely. The Little Shipmuseum in Leifers also tells about the sea and especially about the floating objects on its surface: The exhibit comprises models of historical European ships.
In autumn the wine taverns on the Chestnut-Road invite for the traditional „Törggelen“, the tasting of new wine along with roasted chestnuts and selected South Tyrolean dishes. In winter the ski areas Latemar-Obereggen in Eggental, Reinswald in Sarntal or Seiser Alm are not far.
On a pilgrimage to Maria Weissenstein
The trademark of the village is the little church of St. Peter, the mystical „Peterköfele“. It towers above the city on the road leading to Church of Pilgrimage Maria Weissenstein. The history about the pilgrimage starts in the year 1553, when Virgin Mary appears a farmer to heal him from his disease. She asked him to build her a chapel, where those with faith could bid for her help. So it happened. In today’s church numerous pictures and letters of gratitude decorate the walls, testimony of Mary's help and important role in their healing process.
