On the trails of Ötzi in Schnals
The South Tyrolean commune Schnals lies nestled closely to the mountains, not far from Naturns and Meran and at the entrance of Schnalstal, the place where iceman Ötzi was discovered. The commune comprises the villages Katharinaberg, Karthaus, Unser Frau, Vernagt and Kurzras.
The glacier of Schnals is a particularly impressive mountain and ski area far from the crowds offering cross-country tracks, a toboggan-run, possibilities for snowshoe walking, one of the largest snow parks in the Dolomites and a spectacular view over the glaciers.
In spring time the firn-covered steeps glisten brightly in the sun and offer unforgettable hours outdoors. A special kind of event is the Ötzi Glacier Tour, an alpine walk to the place where the iceman was found, and a round trip with the snow cat „Ötzi-Express“ past glacial bridges and moraines. During the trip daredevils can have their picture taken in a glacier-gap. To see the glacier-mummy “live”, visit the Museum of Archeology in Bozen.
