In the artist’s town of Klausen
The small town of Klausen in South Tyrol is located at a narrow point of the valley Eisacktal, right beneath the Säben Abbey. The historic centre of Klausen has been included to the list of Italy’s most beautiful historic city centres in 2002, but it had been known for its beauty for a long time. Ever since then, the city has been inspiration and motive for artists and painters. Albrecht Dürer eternalized Klausen from an outlook above the city in his engraving “Nemesis (Das große Glück)”. Today, on this site a memorial honours the German painter: the Dürer Stone.
Walking through the romantic old town, the impressive facades and gothic churches, winding alleys and traditional restaurants are reminiscent of the fortune of being able to experience such beauty. The sur-rounding villages Gufidaun, Verdings and Latzfons, which belong to the municipality of Klausen, offer gor-geous hiking trails through gentle green meadows and vineyards beneath the lofty peaks of the Dolomites.
Törggelen – Celebrating the fifth season of the year
The chestnut groves around Klausen provide perhaps the most important ingredient for a typical meal in autumn. Alongside young wine and a selection of traditional South Tyrolean dishes, roasted chestnuts are also being served at the “Törggelen”. This old tradition is best experienced in a traditional farm restaurant or wine tavern located on one of the numerous mountain pastures, in an artistically carved alpine cabin and enjoying gastronomic specialties like sauerkraut, homemade sausages, smoked pork loin, roasted chestnuts and young wine or must. In the valley of Valle Isarco this period of time is also known as the “fifth season”. A “Törggelen” could also be organized at your hotel in Klausen. In this period the Chestnut Festival and the “Gassl Days” are also taking place in the city.
In winter, three of the most famous ski areas in South Tyrol are within easy reach: Val Badia in Alta Badia, Seiser Alm and Plose near the city of Brixen. Around Klausen, numerous cross-country ski trails, snowshoe hikes or ski touring routes are waiting to be explored. Find the best hotels in Klausen in the Eisacktal here.
