There is something about the bell tower
In the late 40s there were still three lakes around Reschenpass, when an Italian company decided to build a power plant. For this purpose the villages Graun and Reschen needed to be flooded and the lakes united to one. The preparations for the damming were going on full speeds. Over 160 families were asked to leave their homes.
Then the explosion of the buildings started. Finally it was the turn of the church of Graun. It didn’t fall! It almost seemed as if the tower was fighting for all those who had become homeless. The tower was left as a warning.
In the year 1950 the gates opened, the Lake of Reschen with the famous Bell Tower was born. Despite the financial compensation, many families found it hard to cope with the loss. Only few of the original inhabitants live to the day in the newly constructed villages. During winter when the lake freezes, the tower can be reached by foot or ice skates. The legend says that if you listen carefully, you can still here the church bells ring.
In the summertime the tower can be reached on a sailing boat. The lake offers also great possibilities for kite surfing, rafting or paragliding.
