Ancient customs in Weitental-Pfunders

Who comes across a group of men, disguised with a white face mask, could be visiting Pfunders in November. On All Saints’ Day they circle the region, these characteristically dancing and singing creatures, who aim to hide their identity at all cost. After dark they visit the surrounding farms to recite poems for the exchange of traditional doughnuts fried in clarified butter. If a lot of these so-called “doughnut-beggars” come to the house, it the coming year promises to yield a large crop.

Beside odd traditions and customs lie the hotels in Weitental-Pfunders far away from the hustle and bustle of Valle Isarco, in an idyllic setting. Here the high route of Pfunders can be accesses, a special hiker’s highlight in South Tyrol which meanders from Sterzing to Pfalzen across the mountains of Pfunders. Other walking paths lead from Dun to the mountain pastures of Gampielalm, of Bodenalm or all the way to Lake Eisbruggjoch, a glacial lake on 2.351 meters. From here you can go further to the mountain lodge Edelraut above the dam of Neves in Mühlwald in Ahrntal, best starting point for tours to the surrounding glaciers Hochfeil, Hoher Weißzint and Hoher Mößeler.

Back in time on the farm-walk

An impressive tour awaits here with the farm-walk „Höfeweg“ in Pfunders, leading to a proud number of historical and still today traditionally cultivated farms. The walk is designed in a family-friendly way and offers a lot of interesting facts about farming customs. On the way you can watch barrel-makers and farmers at work.
In the South Tyrolean ski-resorts and hiking-arenas Gitschberg near Vals, Plose near Brixen or Kronplatz near Bruneck fans of winter sports find numerous other activities revolving around mountain and snow. The medieval towns Bruneck and Brixen offer a lot of intertwined alleys to stroll and take in the delightful sights. Find here the most beautiful hotels in Weitental and Pfunders in Valle Isarco.
