In the reign of Ganes in Wengen
Wide above the busy hustle and bustle of the valley, in the midst of mountains, meadows and forests lies the mythical village Wengen. On the surrounding steeps are said to have lived once the elven-folk Ganes. Today the village lives quietly with the rhythm of nature, around it the neighboring communes Abtei, St. Martin in Thurn and Enneberg.
South of the valley Wengen lie the meadows of Armentara. These are home to many rare plants, which offer a rainbow-like spectacle during spring-time. On the mountain pastures of Armentara visitors find numerous simple hay-sheds, which are believed to stem from pre-historic times. Out of different reasons Wengen isn’t connected directly to the ski-resorts. However, a skibus brings fans of winter sports comfortably to the close-by South Tyrolean ski-resorts Alta Badia and Sellaronda. Visitors of the hotels in Wengen find here the possibility to go horse-back-riding through the fascinating Dolomite region.
Special treats high above the church tower
In the higher situated restaurants and inns of the village culinary pleasures meet breathtakingly beautiful views. Who should wonder about the lonely gothic church tower, may be told that once upon a time the old church was standing beside it. At the end of the 20th century it gave way to the new one. The tower remained. What survived was the baroque high altar, which enjoys now high appreciation along with the ceiling painting of Max Gher.
At river Wengen North of the corresponding valley stand about a dozen traditional settlements, the so-called Weiler (=hamlets). A hamlet is a group of living houses, smaller than a village but bigger than a single house. Through the 1960s Wengen was exclusively reachable via off-road vehicle; guests were picked up at the main street with horse and cart. Today easily accessible roads lead to the most reclusive farms. The oldest hamlet is Tolpei with its St.-Barbara-Chapel; here they used to dig for silver.
