In the labyrinth of fortress Franzensfeste
Already on the arrival it strikes: the fortress built out of solid blocks of granite. The defensive fortification is one of the strongest fortresses in the Alp region and was built in the 19th century by order of Emperor Franz I. The Emperor of Habsburg feared a new Napoleon and insisted on protecting the North-South-Connection. Today the fortress is the trademark of the little village at the former Via Claudia Augusta, at the railway junction of South Tyrol. From here you have direct access to the nearby town of Brixen, but also to Bruneck, Bozen and Meran.
The interior of the fortress offers the site for many different cultural events, whose organisers seek to define Franzensfeste anew via culture. A permanent exhibition tells about the history of the fortress, its inhabitants, legendary treasures and never-fought battles. Within a visit one can experience the fortification and its labyrinth of hallways, staircases, towers and rooms comprising over 20 hectares and giving incredible insights into a world many of us will never know.
Combination of tradition und modernity
Around the village lie the hamlets Oberau, Mittewald and Grasstein, offering starting points for hikes, mountain bike routes and mountain-treks to alpine lodges and peaks. The hotels in Franzensfeste are situated only a short drive from ski areas Plose in Brixen and Rosskopf in Sterzing. A tennis court and a number of romantic restaurants and attractive hotels in Franzensfeste complete the village, where the combination of traditions and modernity has become a skill. A particularly nice evening destination is the brewery Sachsenklemme North of the village.
