The white gold of Laas
Did you ever walk over the radiant floor of Grand Central Terminal in Manhatten New York? Or do you have a holiday snapshot of the Athene fountain in Vienna? If your answer is yes, then you have already seen a part of Laas in Vinschgau.
In central Vinschgau, 5 km from Schlanders, in one of the driest valleys of the region, lies a village which is famous around the world for its white gold, radiant exquisite marble: Laas. High above the village, the marble of Laas is mined in the Jennwand-Massif. Plaster stones, stairs, sculptures, fountains … even gravestones are created from this famous stone.
The American Battle Monument Commission decided in 1947 to use only the best and finest marble for the roundabout 90.000 gravestones dedicated to the American soldiers who had fallen in Europe - the marble of Laas. On the especially designed Marble Walk you will learn everything about this precious stone and the technical wonder of a train which transports the marble from the mountain down to the valley.
Mediterranean flair and traditions
Well worth seeing is the Church of Laas with the skillfully decorated arch - naturally created of white marble - or the Panoramic Walk “Sonnenberg”. Also mountain bikers find a lot of interesting trails in Laas. Discover the cycle path from Reschenpass (Reschen) to Meran, going directly through Laas; or the exciting tours on the paths around Mt.
