Mighty and impressive towers Castle Churburg over the sunny quiet village of Schluderns in Vinschau, which lies at the foot of Mt. Sonnenberg. Castle Churburg is owned by the Lord of Trapp and worldfamous for its fully equipped chamber of armours: the largest armour collection in Europe. On the lawns surrounding the village core, the South Tyrolean Knight Games are organised every summer, with real knights in shining armours, on horsebacks, competing at different games; besides a medieval market with its quaint stands, breathtaking shows and knight parades. Fascinating and a little bit macabre is the gothic Church of Saint Catherine; here the statues of saints are created of skeleton-parts which were found in Roman catacombs.
Those who like to hike, find in Schluderns numerous paths leading through the village, the orchards, the green meadows and lead into the heart of a 100 hectare large biotope, with information boards illustrating the rare animals and plants of Vinschgau. Walk along the ancient paths following the irrigation channels which helped to water the area once. The so-called „Waalwege“ lead through shady forests, over sunny clearances and up to vast heights.
